How to Remedy a Burnt Tongue?

There might have been countless instances where you might have burnt your tongue. The delicious piping hot pizza that you couldn’t wait to have or a sip of your favourite hot coffee may have given you this extremely unpleasant sensation. It happens very quickly, and before you can even realize, you are left with a burnt tongue that doesn’t let you taste properly for days to come. But don’t worry if you have accidentally burnt your tongue and the metallic taste won’t just leave your mouth. We have got you covered with these extremely simple remedies.

  • Soothe the area: In case of any burn, your first step should be to provide comfort to the area that has been hurt. To do so, immediately drink a glass of water. This will balance the temperature of the mouth and help soothe the irritation. It will also resume the production of saliva, which will ensure that bacteria do not have a field day on your tongue.
  • Cooling it down: Consumption of cold beverages and food can numb the discomfort for some time. Foods that are easy on your tongue like yoghurt can help fend against the stinging sensation.
  • Honey to the rescue: A lot of people regard honey as an excellent remedy for any type of burns. You can also use sugar as an alternative. Remember to brush your teeth properly later.
  • Saltwater: The wondrous antiseptic properties that saltwater has may help in relieving any swelling caused by burns. Rinsing the mouth with saltwater gently is an excellent remedy for a burnt tongue.
  • Aloe vera: You wouldn’t be surprised seeing aloe vera on this list. It is known for its cooling effect. Applying aloe vera reduces any pain or swelling and prevents the development of any infection.
  • Medicines: In case none of these remedies work for you, you can resort to medicines like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. This can help in a speedy recovery in case of severe swelling or pain. Using any antibiotic ointment can also help in preventing the development of any bacterial infection.

The burn can be first, second or third degree depending on its severity. While the first-degree burns are pretty common, it is extremely rare to get a third-degree burn on the tongue. If you are not able to taste anything because of a burnt tongue, don’t worry. Our body has the power of repairing itself so the taste buds will redevelop in a few days. It can be a complete nuisance to deal with, but with these quick and effective remedies, you can significantly reverse the damage caused.

In case you have experienced a major burn that has been causing you extreme pain or discomfort for too long, you should seek the help of a medical professional immediately.
